Fire on ice

Gerald W. Sutherland

Hockey is recognized as being one of the fastest and most demanding sports in the world, with a reputation for roughness and physical risk. The risk factor should be defined as the probability of the partici pant's sustaining injury. Because of our growing concern for the physical safety of both male and female ice hockey players at all age levels, this study was designed to: (1) examine the incidence of acciden tal and penalty-related injuries; (2) exam ine the nature and severity of the injuries; (3) analyze the physical risks; (4) identify the causative factors of risk; (5) recom mend changes to enhance the sport's safety.
